"Tinnitus" is the medical term for ringing in the ears. A person with tinnitus may hear a ringing, whistling, or other noise in one or both ears. In a hospital setting, a doctor or nurse might ask a patient if they are experiencing tinnitus, and the patient might reply that they are "hearing ringing in their ears."
